Health Day 2025

Primary 3 – ST MICHAEL’S PRIMARY – HEALTHY INSIDE AND OUT!

A very big THANK YOU to our Primary 3 Health Committee and Miss Mitchell for organising such a fabulous event and the visiting specialists, which allowed us to undertake so many innovative activities. Indeed, what a fabulous day our pupils had yesterday for our 2025 Health Day! The pupils thoroughly enjoyed having a variety of different specialists in to learn new skills.

Some comments from the activities:

Fabulous Fruit was a great success with lots of pupils commenting on how they loved trying new fruits. A big thank you to Mrs Alston for organising this and securing vouchers to alleviate costs, as well as all of you for your donations!

Ross and Nathanial from Southwest Boxing put on a great session for all pupils which involved them using boxing gloves and pads and practicing their new boxing skills. A flyer has been attached to this week’s bulletin informing you of the Mini and Junior Boxing sessions available at Southwest Boxing and the first session is free for all pupils.

Coaches Hana and Sadie from Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club put on some excellent sessions throughout the day even bringing some equipment from the Y to our school for pupils to use. Pupils were very enthusiastic and it was lovely to hear that some of our pupils already attend the Y! Some of the classes have also attended the Y this week for an extra practise.

Louise from DG Training was fantastic in her delivery of Fist aid training, teaching pupils Basic Life Support. Pupils got to practise giving CPR on some of the dummies and teddies, they were all fantastic life savers!

Tracy from Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) also came along to deliver a presentation on red meat production. She even had some examples with her of what a cow’s diet consists of for the pupils to see.

Thank you to Miss Markey who led Emotion Charades helping children to express different emotions. Pupils loved the drama and guessing the emotions.

Thank you to Mr West who taught our pupils’ various football drills in the playground and discussed the importance of being active.

Thank you to Hayley from Active Schools who came along to deliver an Orienteering session for us up on the field. It was great to see the wonderful teamwork that went into finding items on the list.

Finally, thank you to St. Josephs College for allowing us to use their field on Health Day, The Health Committee wrote a lovely letter requesting the use of this. Some of the senior pupils also came along to help our pupils with some of the activities yesterday giving up their whole day!

The teachers were very pleased with the wonderful effort, behaviour and manners displayed by all pupils throughout the day and the scores for the winning team were extremely close, only a 0.5 difference! The winning house was… CAERLAVEROCK 2!! Well done to these pupils, who received their 10 extra minutes of playtime today, well deserved for your hard work and effort throughout the day.

We are organising a whole school health day on Thursday 21st March. Details to follow.

The Golden Apple Award

Healthy Snacks – Golden Apple Award
The Golden Apple Award continues this week until the end of term. All pupils and staff are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to school in order to win the Golden Apple Award. Pupils will receive points for having water and a healthy snack each day. The points will be calculated on a weekly basis and the winning class will receive the Golden Apple Award. However, the committee do not wish to be too harsh and once a week there will be Fun Friday, which means pupils and staff can indulge in any snack that they like. At the end of the 11 weeks, the class who have won the most amount of times will receive a certificate of achievement and also have an additional break/play time.
