Primary 5 and 6 Internet Safety – Police Visit

On Thursday morning next week our Primary 5 and 6 pupils will have a visit from our local Community Police Officer to speak directly with the children about Internet Safety. This important session aims to teach kids how to stay safe online, recognize potential dangers, and make smart choices while using the internet.

We believe this will be a valuable learning experience for all of our pupils and I encourage you to please talk with your child afterward to reinforce these important messages at home.

Primary 5 Trip to Bannockburn

Primary 5 pupils had a fantastic trip to The Battle of Bannockburn Centre on Wednesday of this week.  This forms part of their Scottish Wars of Independence topic, which they are studying this term.  During this visit the children took part in a range of interesting and exciting activities including a replica weapons and armour handling workshop, discussions of the events leading up to the battle and the tactics employed by the two armies. They impressed their guide with their accurate and in-depth knowledge of the Scottish Wars of Independence and the events leading up to the Battle at Bannockburn. I am sure they had lots to tell you about on their return.  Well done Primary 5, I am so proud of you all!

Class trips to Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club

Our P1, P2, P3 and P5 classes thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club this week. This was such an exciting opportunity for the pupils to either have their first go at doing some gymnastics or further develop their skills, as well as having lots of fun in a well-equipped facility during the trips. Pupils enjoyed using the variety of equipment available and certainly worked hard during their visit. Thank you to Miss Mitchell and the P3 Health Committee for organising our visits.

Primary 5 were put in to teams and given a challenge to build castles from Kapla, using their knowledge of castle features they had learned about during topic work. They were all able to show me the various features they had added to their castles. They did an amazing job and had a lot of fun doing it.
P5 Transition Football with Dumfries Academy

A huge well done to our Primary 5 class who took part in the recent Dumfries Carnival organised by The Big Burns Supper. They have worked hard over their dance workshops to learn their routine and did us all, and their town, proud on the day.

School Christmas Show – The Stars Are Coming Out For Christmas (P4-7)

Well I am sure everyone who came to see our Primary 4-7 Christmas Show this week will agree that all of our pupils put on an excellent performance and all their hard work over the last few weeks paid off.  Once again I wish to say a very big THANK YOU to all the staff who without their hard work events such as this would not take place and a massive WELL DONE to all of our Primary 4-7 pupils who gave us a fantastically wonderful Christmas Show! We are so proud of you all!

Christmas Party
Today there was lots of singing, dancing and games for our Primary 4 – 7 pupils, who had their Christmas parties.  It was lovely to see everyone in their party clothes and having a fun time, taking part in all the festive games and dance! Thank you also to everyone for kindly donating an item of food for the Christmas party – these were very much enjoyed by all the children.  Your support and generosity is very much appreciated.

Also, a big THANK YOU to the Parent and Carer Group for the Christmas gift for each class, which they were delighted to receive.

St Andrew’s Day

It was lovely to see so many of our pupils wearing a ‘Touch of Tartan’, or in some cases a great deal of Tartan to celebrate St Andrew’s Day on Thursday of this week.  The whole school was very colourful and certainly and made us all feel very patriotic.  We also celebrated with some traditional Scottish shortbread, washed down with some Irn Bru!

To support awareness of this special day our Pupil Council arranged an ‘in-house’ art competition for each class. They have been learning about the myth of the Wild Haggis and producing a drawing of what we think it might look like! Our Pupil Council are now busy judging the entries and will announce the winners in each class at next week’s Assembly.

Author visit – Alistair Chisholm
Mrs Robinson and our Primary 5 Languages Committee secured a fully funded author visit through the Big Dog Festival. Yesterday, on Tuesday 26th November, we welcomed well-renowned children’s author, Alistair Chisholm, to St Michael’s Primary School where he held a workshop for the Primary 5 and 6 children.
Class Topic
This term our topic is all about science. We have had lots of fun learning about this as you can see from the pictures below…

World Children’s Day – 20th November (by Callum P7 and Kayda P7)

Thank you to everyone who came to school wearing blue to celebrate World Children’s Day. The school was a sea of blue colours on Wednesday and it was fun to see what everyone chose to wear (Kayda). It is important to see everyone raise awareness for World Children’s Day and it was amazingly fun to celebrate children and their rights (Callum).

Maths Week 2024

Primary 2 and Mrs Glendinning have been very busy planning some fun and exciting activities for Maths Week which will run from Monday 23rd September to Friday 27th September. Each class will have a learning event which will either take place in the hall or in their classroom.

We were thrilled so many parent/carers from each class were able to join us for these learning events.

Dumfries Carnival

Our Primary 5 pupils had a wonderful time on Thursday, engaging in the first of their dance workshops, in preparation for their participation in the Dumfries Carnival, which is being run by the Big Burns Supper Team and will take place on Saturday 18th January 2025. The instructors were delighted with the enthusiasm and hard work all of the pupils put into the dance and are very much looking forward to returning soon for their next workshop.  Well done Primary 5, we are so looking forward to the next workshop, when you will further progress with your dance!

Primary 5 and Primary 6 Ewart Library Visit

Primary 5 and Primary 6 visited the Ewart Library on Monday 9th September to help celebrate the library’s 120th birthday. This involved a tour of the library hosted by the Mostly Ghostly team. The children had a fantastic day and enjoyed celebrating with the staff at the Ewart Library.

Meet the Teacher PowerPoint –

Please see below the Meet the Teacher Power-Point from the Primary 5 Class Teacher so that you can put a face to the name and also be aware of other individuals who may be in supporting the class during the week. This Power Point also shares with you information on the work being covered this session and provides information on the organisation of the work regarding Homework, Journey Books, PE etc.
