Primary 4  – August 2024

Our new Primary 4’s have had a brilliant week settling back into school. We are all very excited to start our Primary 4 adventure and continue learning together! -Miss Markey and Miss McQuarrie

Term 4:

Primary 4 Ice Skating

Our Primary 4 pupils had another super ice skating session on Tuesday. Again, they all did amazing, showing bravery and confidence to have a go as well as support for one another. Indeed, a number of pupils took the leap and gave up the penguins, demonstrating their ability to begin skating independently. Well done to everyone for all your efforts and also a very big THANK YOU to all the adult helpers who came along to escort our pupils to and from the Ice Bowl, it is very much appreciated.

Primary 4 & 5 Cricket sessions

On Tuesday, Primary 4 and 5 enjoyed their final sessions of cricket with coaches from St Michael’s Cricket Club. They enjoyed learning new skills and completed small team activities. They had lots of fun and participated with great sportsmanship! The coaches commented on their hard work and enthusiasm being one of the best groups they had worked with during their school visits. Well done everyone!

The Junior Cricket Club runs every Monday from 6:30pm and they are always looking for new members if any of our children would like to join.

Primary 4 Trip to New Lanark – World Heritage Site

Primary 4 enjoyed an extremely worthwhile visit to New Lanark this week, learning about renewable energy and how people lived and worked in the 19th century.  We are delighted you all enjoyed this experience Primary 4! Thank you again to Mrs Bremner for organising this trip and to our parent helper for coming along, it is greatly appreciated!

Primary 4 Ram Tam Concert

This week our Primary 4 pupils welcomed in their parents/carers and family members to celebrate all the hard work and learning they have been doing with Ram Tam over the last few weeks, practising songs and creating their own songs! We were all very impressed with the skills and learning they have picked up in the short time they have spent together. We hope you enjoyed this celebration of learning as much as we did. Well done Primary 4, you are all St Michael’s stars!

A big THANK YOU to all the parents/carers and family members who came along yesterday to participate it our Outdoor Learning Family Engagement Day which was led by DG Outdoor & Woodland Learning (DG OWL) leads – Leah and Sissy. Play is important in the early years!  It is great for your child to have the space and freedom outdoors to invent, be creative, experiment, explore, investigate, lead, jump, skip, climb, run and use all of their senses. This event was extremely well supported by our families, with everyone getting the opportunity to see first-hand how we can support our children to see the beauty of Maths in Nature and how we can help to make Maths relevant to the world around them.  Everyone got a little box of tricks to take home, which I am sure they will enjoy using when out and about.

Burns Workshops – Primary 3 and Primary 4

This week, our Primary 3 and Primary 4 classes enjoyed attending a local Robert Burns trip to find out information about his life and work in Dumfries and to celebrate his birthday on the 25th January. Each trip lasted a full day and included a visit to the Robert Burns Centre, Burns House and to the mausoleum. Pupils were given the chance to take part in re-enactments of famous poems, including Tam O’Shanter, handle different historical items and to collaborate with classmates to construct a special wreath for Burns. This wreath was then placed at the mausoleum during the final stage of the trip.  Both classes really enjoyed the trip and asked some very insightful and impressive questions. A big THANK YOU to Tom Hughes for leading each trip and to the parent helpers who supported, as we could not attend without your help!

P4/5 Christmas Party

Today there was lots of singing, dancing and games for our Primary 4 – 7 pupils, who had their Christmas parties.  It was lovely to see everyone in their party clothes and having a fun time, taking part in all the festive games and dance! Thank you also to everyone for kindly donating an item of food for the Christmas party – these were very much enjoyed by all the children.  Your support and generosity is very much appreciated.

Also, a big THANK YOU to the Parent and Carer Group for the Christmas gift for each class, which they were delighted to receive.

School Christmas Show – The Stars Are Coming Out For Christmas (P4-7)

Well I am sure everyone who came to see our Primary 4-7 Christmas Show this week will agree that all of our pupils put on an excellent performance and all their hard work over the last few weeks paid off.  Once again I wish to say a very big THANK YOU to all the staff who without their hard work events such as this would not take place and a massive WELL DONE to all of our Primary 4-7 pupils who gave us a fantastically wonderful Christmas Show! We are so proud of you all!

Dumfries Academy – Transition Basketball Event

Primary 4 thoroughly enjoyed their last basketball transition event at Dumfries Academy yesterday. The children were split up into groups where they moved around learning new skills.

St Andrew’s Day

It was lovely to see so many of our pupils wearing a ‘Touch of Tartan’, or in some cases a great deal of Tartan to celebrate St Andrew’s Day on Thursday of this week.  The whole school was very colourful and certainly and made us all feel very patriotic.  We also celebrated with some traditional Scottish shortbread, washed down with some Irn Bru!

To support awareness of this special day our Pupil Council arranged an ‘in-house’ art competition for each class. They have been learning about the myth of the Wild Haggis and producing a drawing of what we think it might look like! Our Pupil Council are now busy judging the entries and will announce the winners in each class at next week’s Assembly.

Dumfries Academy – Transition Basketball Event

Primary 4 thoroughly enjoyed their first basketball transition event at Dumfries Academy yesterday. The children were split up into groups where they moved around learning new skills. They are already looking forward to next week.

The Human Body

This term our topic is the human body. We have had lots of fun learning about this as you can see from the pictures below…

World Children’s Day – 20th November (by Callum P7 and Kayda P7)

Thank you to everyone who came to school wearing blue to celebrate World Children’s Day. The school was a sea of blue colours on Wednesday and it was fun to see what everyone chose to wear (Kayda). It is important to see everyone raise awareness for World Children’s Day and it was amazingly fun to celebrate children and their rights (Callum).

Term 1:

Maths Week 2024

Primary 2 and Mrs Glendinning have been very busy planning some fun and exciting activities for Maths Week which will run from Monday 23rd September to Friday 27th September. Each class will have a learning event which will either take place in the hall or in their classroom.

We were thrilled so many parent/carers from each class were able to join us for these learning events.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra Concert Trip

On Thursday 12th September, Primary 4 and Primary 7 attended a concert at The Bridge in Dumfries, held by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The children had the opportunity to listen to songs played by the orchestra, as well as join in with some singing! They learned about the various sections of an orchestra and the names of instruments which are played alongside each other. Both classes had a great time and if any of the children are feeling inspired by their morning out of school, lessons for various instruments are available.

Lilah and Eilidh are using sticks and each others head to make a rhythm for the trombone to play along with!

Cody and Faiz are amazed when a musician sets up a Double Bass!

Primary 7 pupils are excitedly waiting for the show to start!
