P3 Soup Making
Following on from Primary 3’s Fruit and Vegetable Awareness Session last week we have made a vegetable soup. The pupils helped to chop up a variety of vegetables to put in the pot and even got to taste their soup at the end of the day. Lots of pupils tried new vegetables for the first time and were surprised to find that they liked them! Well done Primary 3!
Primary 3 Fruit and Vegetable Awareness Session
Primary 3 were lucky enough to receive a Fruit and Vegetable Awareness Session last week from Nutritionists who visited our school. They brought a selection of popular and exotic fruits for pupils to try including dragon fruit, kiwi, passionfruit, plums and mangoes. The pupils absolutely loved putting on their chef hats and chopping up different fruits to try and it was brilliant to hear them share their new favourite fruits! Following on from this session, Primary 3 were donated some vegetables to make into soup which was a great success yesterday, again with pupils trying new things. This session and the donations have been fantastic for allowing our pupil’s opportunities to try new things and Primary 3 have been so enthusiastic, even eating all the kiwis at lunch time now!
A big THANK YOU to all the parents/carers and family members who came along yesterday to participate it our Outdoor Learning Family Engagement Day which was led by DG Outdoor & Woodland Learning (DG OWL) leads – Leah and Sissy. Play is important in the early years! It is great for your child to have the space and freedom outdoors to invent, be creative, experiment, explore, investigate, lead, jump, skip, climb, run and use all of their senses. This event was extremely well supported by our families, with everyone getting the opportunity to see first-hand how we can support our children to see the beauty of Maths in Nature and how we can help to make Maths relevant to the world around them. Everyone got a little box of tricks to take home, which I am sure they will enjoy using when out and about.
Primary 3 have been working hard on their Meta-Skills.
Primary 3 and Primary 6 – Sports Leaders Award
For the past few weeks Primary 6 have been working hard with Hayley from Active Schools to prepare and plan some sports activities, which they taught to Primary 3 this week. This provided opportunities for both classes to take part in physical activity, and it gave Primary 6 the opportunity to work on their leadership skills. There was a variety of different activities planned and enjoyed by Primary 3. Please keep an eye on our website to see the pictures. Primary 6 were all presented with their Sports Leaders Certificates at this assembly this morning. Well done to both classes.
Primary 3 trip to Tullie House
On Monday 24th February, Primary 3 went on a trip to Tullie House museum in Carlisle. The pupils were especially excited to ride the bus for the first time on a school trip! During our visit, the pupils participated in an Ancient Egyptian Workshop which consisted of numerous activities including mummifying a dummy, digging for amulets, solving hieroglyphic codes, learning about ancient gods and goddesses as well as everyday life in ancient Egypt. The museum also had plenty of opportunities for the pupils to dress up as lots of different historical figures, which they loved. The workshop ended with the pupils acting out an ‘Opening of the Mouth’ ceremony, the Primary 3’s were excellent actors! The behaviour was excellent throughout this trip, well done Primary 3. Also, a big THANK YOU to our parent helpers without whom we would have been unable to go on this trip.
Burns Workshops – Primary 3 and Primary 4
This week, our Primary 3 and Primary 4 classes enjoyed attending a local Robert Burns trip to find out information about his life and work in Dumfries and to celebrate his birthday on the 25th January. Each trip lasted a full day and included a visit to the Robert Burns Centre, Burns House and to the mausoleum. Pupils were given the chance to take part in re-enactments of famous poems, including Tam O’Shanter, handle different historical items and to collaborate with classmates to construct a special wreath for Burns. This wreath was then placed at the mausoleum during the final stage of the trip. Both classes really enjoyed the trip and asked some very insightful and impressive questions. A big THANK YOU to Tom Hughes for leading each trip and to the parent helpers who supported, as we could not attend without your help!

P1, P2 and P3 Christmas Party and Christmas Lunch
On Wednesday there was lots of singing, dancing and games for our Primary 1 – 3 pupils, who had their Christmas party. It was lovely to see everyone in their party clothes and having a fun time, taking part in all the festive games and dance! Thank you to everyone for kindly donating an item of food for the Christmas party – these were very much enjoyed by all the children. Your support and generosity is very much appreciated.
Also, a big THANK YOU to the Parent and Carer Group for the Christmas gift for each class, which they were delighted to receive.
School Christmas Show – McTivity (P1-3)
Well I am sure everyone who came to see our Primary 1-3 Christmas Show this week will agree that all of our pupils put on an excellent performance and all their hard work over the last few weeks paid off. Once again I wish to say a very big THANK YOU to all the staff who without their hard work events such as this would not take place and a massive WELL DONE to all of our Primary 1-3 pupils who gave us a fantastically wonderful Christmas Show! We are so proud of you all!
We are now very much looking forward to our Upper Primary Christmas Show – ‘The Stars are Coming Out for Christmas’ will be held on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th December in the afternoon. I look forward to welcoming you then.
P3 Class Enterprise – Snowmen made and sold at our Christmas Fayre
St Andrew’s Day
It was lovely to see so many of our pupils wearing a ‘Touch of Tartan’, or in some cases a great deal of Tartan to celebrate St Andrew’s Day on Thursday of this week. The whole school was very colourful and certainly and made us all feel very patriotic. We also celebrated with some traditional Scottish shortbread, washed down with some Irn Bru!
To support awareness of this special day our Pupil Council arranged an ‘in-house’ art competition for each class. They have been learning about the myth of the Wild Haggis and producing a drawing of what we think it might look like! Our Pupil Council are now busy judging the entries and will announce the winners in each class at next week’s Assembly.
Read Write and Count – P2 and P3 Family Engagement/Learning Event
Thank you to everyone that attended our Read, Write, Count Family Engagement/Learning Events for Primary 2 and Primary 3 this week.
The aim of the Read, Write, Count Campaign delivered by the Scottish Book Trust is to encourage families to include reading, writing and counting activities in their everyday lives and become actively engaged in their child’s learning journey.
We held a mini gifting event where families had the opportunity to sit with their child and together explore the contents of the bag and get ideas on how everyday activities can be used to enhance and celebrate our children’s literacy and numeracy skills. For pupils whose parent/family members were unable to attend, do not worry, a Primary 7 pupil explored the items in the bag with them.
This was a wonderful opportunity and I was delighted to see so many of you there.
Into Film Festival
Primary 3 went to the Burns Centre for the Into Film Festival and watched Harold and the Purple Crayon. It was such a great film from what I hear.

Maths Week 2024
Primary 2 and Mrs Glendinning have been very busy planning some fun and exciting activities for Maths Week which will run from Monday 23rd September to Friday 27th September. Each class will have a learning event which will either take place in the hall or in their classroom.
We were thrilled so many parent/carers from each class were able to join us for these learning events.
Meet the Teacher PowerPoint –
Please see below the Meet the Teacher Power-Point from the Primary 3 Class Teachers so that you can put a face to the name and also be aware of other individuals who may be in supporting the class during the week. This Power Point also shares with you information on the work being covered this session and provides information on the organisation of the work regarding Homework, Journey Books, PE etc.
Class teachers will continue their regular communication to keep connected and share with you the learning and teaching taking place in your child’s class and the Home/School Diaries are also there for your use to support strong communication links between home and school.
Nevertheless, if you have any concerns or queries, at any time, please contact the school to arrange a meeting, so that matters can be dealt with promptly. Our policy is to deal with any worries or concern you or your child may have quickly for ease of mind.
