Primary 1 Class Visit to the Fire Station
Primary 1 have been learning about people who help us, and really enjoyed their trip to the Fire Station, Brooms Road on Thursday, 19th June. When we tried to attend this trip earlier in the school year, there was a call out so our tour of the fire station was cut short. Yesterday, we were able to complete the tour, including pupils being able to sit in a fire engine and getting the chance to squirt water with the hose! Thank you to our student, Miss Kurowska, and parent helper for accompanying us on this trip. Well done Primary 1, you were all St. Michael’s stars!

Primary 1-4 Outdoor Learning Family Engagement Day
A big THANK YOU to all the parents/carers and family members who came along yesterday to participate it our Outdoor Learning Family Engagement Day which was led by DG Outdoor & Woodland Learning (DG OWL) leads – Leah and Sissy. Play is important in the early years! It is great for your child to have the space and freedom outdoors to invent, be creative, experiment, explore, investigate, lead, jump, skip, climb, run and use all of their senses. This event was extremely well supported by our families, with everyone getting the opportunity to see first-hand how we can support our children to see the beauty of Maths in Nature and how we can help to make Maths relevant to the world around them. Everyone got a little box of tricks to take home, which I am sure they will enjoy using when out and about.
Primary 1 Nature Walk
On Wednesday, 19th March, Primary 1 went out on a nature walk as part of both their Scotland Topic which is nearing completion, and Living and Growing Topic about to commence. Primary 1 enjoyed hunting for items within nature in the Dock Park, looking for pine cones, different colours of leaves, sticks, stones and feathers. Thank you to our parent helpers that accompanied us on our walk, the sun was shining and our Primary 1 pupils behaved brilliantly and safely during our walk. Well done Primary 1!
Class trips to Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club
Our P1, P2, P3 and P5 classes thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club this week. This was such an exciting opportunity for the pupils to either have their first go at doing some gymnastics or further develop their skills, as well as having lots of fun in a well-equipped facility during the trips. Pupils enjoyed using the variety of equipment available and certainly worked hard during their visit. Thank you to Miss Mitchell and the P3 Health Committee for organising our visits.
Primary 1 made bird feeders
Pancake Day
Primary 1 were collaborating on Shrove Tuesday by making and tasting pancakes. Pupils listened to the story of Shrove Tuesday and then took a turn to shake the mixture; before watching the pancakes being cooked in the pan; then waiting for them to cool to choose sugar, lemon juice or both to add to their pancake for tasting. Lastly, pupils wrote a sentence to describe what we did and drew their favourite pancake and topping. All in all, the pancakes were a success, almost everyone thought they were delicious!
100 days in Primary 1!
Our Primary 1 pupils celebrated 100 days of school today by taking part in fun activities to mark the occasion. Pupils coloured in their own crowns; were presented with certificates; decorated biscuits with icing and ‘hundreds and thousands’; bounced 100 times; counted to 100 with a silly song; and had their photos taken nearly 100 times! What a busy and fun day in Primary 1! Look out for photos on the website and in book bags next week from Mrs Alston.

P1, 2 and 3 – Christmas Party
On Wednesday there was lots of singing, dancing and games for our Primary 1 – 3 pupils, who had their Christmas party. It was lovely to see everyone in their party clothes and having a fun time, taking part in all the festive games and dance! Thank you to everyone for kindly donating an item of food for the Christmas party – these were very much enjoyed by all the children. Your support and generosity is very much appreciated.
Also, a big THANK YOU to the Parent and Carer Group for the Christmas gift for each class, which they were delighted to receive.
P1 Class Enterprise
P1 have been busy designing and hand painting their individual tiles to sell at our Christmas Fayre.
UPDATE: P1 made a fantastic profit of £126.00 – many thanks to everyone who came along and supported us.
School Christmas Show – McTivity (P1-3)
Well I am sure everyone who came to see our Primary 1-3 Christmas Show this week will agree that all of our pupils put on an excellent performance and all their hard work over the last few weeks paid off. Once again I wish to say a very big THANK YOU to all the staff who without their hard work events such as this would not take place and a massive WELL DONE to all of our Primary 1-3 pupils who gave us a fantastically wonderful Christmas Show! We are so proud of you all!
We are now very much looking forward to our Upper Primary Christmas Show – ‘The Stars are Coming Out for Christmas’ will be held on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th December in the afternoon. I look forward to welcoming you then.
Christmas Singing at The Granary Mews
In our endeavours to spread some Christmas cheer, the Global Gang thought it was the perfect opportunity to engage with elderly members of our local community and as a result on Monday myself and four members of the Global Gang Darcie (P4), Lennox, P6. Micah (P5) and Lilah (P5) met with members of The Granary Community and arranged for our Primary 1 and 2 pupils to sing some of their Christmas Concert songs. It was a wonderful afternoon with the children showcasing their talents whilst at the same time providing entertainment for elderly members of our community.
Here are some of our Global Gang members meeting with management at the Granary Mews to arrange for P1 and 2 to visit and sing some Christmas songs.

St Andrew’s Day
It was lovely to see so many of our pupils wearing a ‘Touch of Tartan’, or in some cases a great deal of Tartan to celebrate St Andrew’s Day on Thursday of this week. The whole school was very colourful and certainly and made us all feel very patriotic. We also celebrated with some traditional Scottish shortbread, washed down with some Irn Bru!
To support awareness of this special day our Pupil Council arranged an ‘in-house’ art competition for each class. They have been learning about the myth of the Wild Haggis and producing a drawing of what we think it might look like! Our Pupil Council are now busy judging the entries and will announce the winners in each class at next week’s Assembly.
World Children’s Day – 20th November (by Callum P7 and Kayda P7)
Thank you to everyone who came to school wearing blue to celebrate World Children’s Day. The school was a sea of blue colours on Wednesday and it was fun to see what everyone chose to wear (Kayda). It is important to see everyone raise awareness for World Children’s Day and it was amazingly fun to celebrate children and their rights (Callum).

Primary 1 Parent/Carers – Induction Event 3
Thank you to all Parents and Carers who came to our third and final P1 induction event to further support our new Primary 1 pupils and their families during this period of transition. Mrs Alston and Miss Bodell were thrilled with the turn out. This event gave us an opportunity to look at the activities and resources your child will be introduced to over the next few months and how you can support your child. Thank you also to the staff who supported and held a crèche facility to allow for as many parents/carers to come along as possible.

27/06/24 – Fire Station Visit
Primary 1 have been learning about people who help us, and enjoyed a fun trip to the Fire Station on Brooms Road this Wednesday. Pupils had a tour of the fire engines & heavy rescue engine; watched the extendable ladders being operated on top of the fire engine; had a go at using the water hoses; and even watched a live call out, where firefighters got into their protective clothing, into the fire engine and head out of the station in the fire engine with lights and sirens. Thank you to our parent and grandparent helpers, without your help we couldn’t take our children on exciting trips. All pupils were extremely well behaved and excellent ambassadors for St. Michael’s Primary, well done Primary 1!
